Among aging-induced impairments, those affecting cognitive functions certainly represent one the most major challenge to face improve elderly quality of life. In last decades, our knowledge on changes in morphology and function neuronal networks associated with normal pathological brain aging has rapidly progressed, initiating development different pharmacological behavioural strategies alleviate aging. particular, experimental evidences have accumulated indicating that communication between neurons its plasticity gradually weakens Because pivotal role for functional plasticity, N-Methyl?d-Aspartate receptor subtype glutamate receptors (NMDAr) gathered much interest. NMDAr activation is regulated by many mechanisms. mandatory binding a co-agonist, such as amino acid d-serine, order activate NMDAr. This mini-review presents recent information how d-serine could contribute mechanisms physiological also considers divergent views relative co-agonist Alzheimer's disease.
